Photography
and Contemporary Web Design
At Black Bear Ventures, photography is a key component of our web design work.
Photographic imagery and digital manipulation of pictures is at the heart of most web designs and web sites produced at Black Bear Ventures. Personally, I am greatly inspired by powerful photography, whether it be a still photo, a great camera angle in a video or a terrific magazine page layout incorporating fine photography and typography.
Of course, the dramatic Rocky Mountain landscapes in Canmore, Alberta and Canada's Banff National Park offer up particularly stimulating visuals on a daily basis. It's hard not to be influenced by and driven to record and share the magnificent displays of landscape and light witnessed throughout the changing seasons in this corner of the Canadian Rockies.
Now, the massive adoption of the Internet by the general public has opened gateways in all directions as far as photographic sharing and publishing of visual web content across the globe is concerned.
Seeing is Believing
Hello, my name is Garth Henderson. I'm the owner/operator of Black Bear Ventures, a web strategy and design consultantcy operating in the Bow Valley. I've had a passion for photography since my teens. I was first introduced to the finer points of camera operation and film development by my skiing buddy in high school. Together, we spent endless hours at the ski hills recording each other busting powder, skiing off cliffs and generally "stylin" in the moguls. Developing the photos in a basement "lab" afterwards was all part of the fun.
In my 20's, I was fortunate to be accepted into an innovative, 2 year visual communications program offered by The Banff School of Fine Arts in world-famous Banff National Park. In that program I learned how to "see" and use camera and darkroom techniques to create stronger more compelling visuals. As students of the art, we were continually challenged to explore the power of design and visual composition as well as the impact and importance of lighting in the creation of great visual media.
Digital Photography & The Web
The digital age has had profound effects on the practice of photography. In many ways it has made photography more versatile and efficient as a business tool. It's also made photography easier and more fun. Digital visuals now form the core of practical web design and obviously are a very popular form of web content.
Not surprisingly, photography became a natural fit when I began to work with the Internet in the mid 1990's. Since that time, digital photography has come into its own in a huge way on the web. My approach to photographic web content has changed along with the steady evolution of web design and digital publishing. I still believe strongly in the power and impact of the still photo, but now I also embrace the messaging power inherent in online video publishing and other animated, visually rich web technologies.
